Non-viral Delivery Methods in the Gene Therapy Industry

When considering viral gene therapy, which of the below are you currently working with?

77% of gene therapy professionals revealed they were working with viral methods when considering viral gene therapy delivery, in a recent study by Informa Connect.

Cell and gene therapy professionals from across biotech companies in North America and Europe took part in the survey, which investigated the uses of viral and non-viral vectors within the sector.

Out of the applicable respondents, only 1 in 5 said that they worked with non-viral vectors for gene therapy delivery, and just under 4% said they were working with other methods.

The potential of non-viral methods

Out of those using non-viral methods, the majority said they were working with messenger RNA and plasmids, while 19% said they were using liposomes instead. mRNA ranked the most popular delivery vehicle used by 44% of the respondents, with plasmids closely behind at 38%.

Which non viral methods are you working with?

More than half of the respondents said they believe manufacturing challenges to be the concern that non-viral methods have the most potential to address.

The remaining respondents were fairly evenly split between supply chain challenges, stability concerns and potency. 5% of respondents offered alternative benefits such as ‘quality (safety and consistency)’ and ‘speed and robustness but only in certain products (i.e. ex vivo cell modification)’.
