Less is "Moore": AI is changing the law of semiconductors

AI-specific microchips will drive the next wave of semiconductor and overall tech innovation.

Moore's Law has been superseded and, in fact, lessened by another law: the law of physics. Simply put, semiconductor manufacturing processes are up against immutable physical limitations that appear at extremely-small dimensions. As a result, the pace of doubling has slowed to 30 months. The knock-on effect has been a slowdown in the pace of innovation throughout the tech industry – and a deceleration in productivity growth throughout the global economy.

The Age of "Moore" Acceleration

To extend the industry’s historic rate of progress – and to enable the business to take on present and future computing challenges – semiconductor suppliers now must work harder, devising creative solutions to keep chip technology development on a positive trajectory and, essentially, accelerate Moore’s Law.

AI enablement is paramount to accelerated semiconductor revenue growth.

With AI acceleration driving the current wave of AI innovation, the market for AI chipsets is set for rapid growth. Global revenue for processors with cores targeting AI acceleration is expected to rise at an impressive compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 35.4% from 2019 to 2024. Sales will expand by more than a factor of four, growing to $66.5 billion in 2024, according to Omdia.

Essential Acceleration

The strong demand outlook for chips with AI acceleration also reveals the technology value chain has reached an inflection point. Over the past year, the consensus view in the enterprise and edge markets has changed – with AI acceleration now considered an essential feature, rather than a desirable option.
