Navigating the global EPA and DHA Omega-3 market in these challenging times

Navigating the ups and downs of the EPA and DHA omega-3 industry has never been more important. While there was solid growth in 2022 — and the omega-3 industry continues to be a diverse and thriving market with a global reach — supply chain issues, inflation, the war in Ukraine and rising fish oil and supplement prices are all adding challenges to market dynamics.

The COVID-19 pandemic resulted in fluctuations in normal buying habits, changes in consumer priorities and purchase behaviors, and in economic and logistical disruptions. The price of fish oils is also at an all-time high, and this — coupled with the above-mentioned supply chain issues — is resulting in increased prices all the way to the final consumer level. At this point, it is unclear how this may affect consumer demand, and increases in the price of articles of first necessity, like food and energy, may result in a reduction of discretionary spending on dietary supplements and other consumer products.

Supply chain and pricing issues notwithstanding, the EPA and DHA omega-3 market is still projected to grow on a global basis. According to GOED’s proprietary research, the total volume of omega-3 oils used globally grew 2.2% in 2021 (the last year for which figures are available) to 115,758 metric tons (mT). The total market value of these ingredients was 1,576.6 million US dollars (MM US$), up 5.5% from 2020. The volume of ingredient oils used by the EPA and DHA omega-3 market is expected to reach 121,266 metric tons by 2024, at an average 1.8% annual growth rate.

For the 2022–2023 timeframe, growth of the overall EPA and DHA finished product market is expected to average 3.2% annually.
