Q1. What is the biggest advancement your company has achieved in the past year, and how does that benefit your customers?
Documenting the health benefits of krill oil and krill-derived products has been at the forefront of Aker BioMarine’s strong science and product development team since the beginning. The past year was no different where we have concluded several human clinical trials in various health areas, focusing on choline uptake and bioavailability, sports performance (through our latest publication in combination with the Norseman Xtreme Triathlon), skin health and liver health.
How does this benefit our customers? Krill oil is a relatively new ingredient and there are a multitude of health benefit applications to investigate. Our customers need to stand out from the crowd and differentiate with innovative ingredients. Krill oil is a fantastic ingredient due to its natural combination of several nutrients – phospholipid omega-3 fatty acids, choline and astaxanthin – that work together to promote good health.
Aker BioMarine is going beyond traditional health benefits, such as heart health, by documenting the benefits of krill oil for sports performance, skin health and liver health.
Q2. What trends are driving demands for your products/services?
Before the pandemic, healthy living meant exercising regularly and creating good nutritional habits. The Covid crisis has propelled us toward an even greater sense of healthy living. Consumers seek to optimize their health on all fronts where preventive health, health optimization, mental health and happiness sit at the top of their priorities.
Sustainability and sustainable product awareness have also never been higher as climate and food waste issues are presenting businesses with challenges and opportunities all over the world. Due to krill oil’s multi-nutrient natural composition, it is uniquely positioned to tap into this new wave of health-conscious consumers by offering a multi-faceted approach to taking care of health.
Q3. What is your company’s point of differentiation in the market?
Superba Krill oil is a marine phospholipid complex with omega-3 and choline for head-to-toe benefits. Where others blend ingredients, Superba Krill oil naturally contains several important nutrients with an array of functions in the body. While krill oil is well-known for it’s omega-3 benefits, choline content offers brands a major differentiation point in a crowded omega-3 market.
Just 2 capsules a day of Superba BoostTM gives access to 4 EU authorised health claims for heart and liver health. Building on the well-established health benefits of omega-3 EPA and DHA on heart health, choline brings 2 additional heart health claims pertaining to normal lipid metabolism and normal homocysteine metabolism, and a further claim for normal liver function.
Brands can further make use of liver health claims and muscle health claim.
Using omega-3 and choline in product positioning sets krill oil apart from other omega-3 supplements and allows our customers to truly differentiate their brand in the physical and online shelves.

At Vitafoods Europe 2021, we are all about the Krill Effect and the end consumer. Q1. Who are Great Lakes Gelatin?
Great Lakes Gelatin is a pioneering producer of premium branded collagen, gelatin and related products. Originally founded in 1922 and known previously as Grayslake Gelatin Company, the company was one of the first to actively promote the wellness benefits of collagen. In 2010 Great Lakes became the first brand to offer dissolvable collagen peptides in the US on Amazon.
Great Lakes was a family owned and operated business until its acquisition by WM Partners in August 2020.
With the change in ownership, there was a desire to change the company/brand growth trajectory.
In August of this year, Great Lakes Gelatin Company rebranded as Great Lakes Wellness with a new name, updated positioning and upcoming new products.

Q1. What is the biggest advancement your company has achieved in the past year, and how does that benefit your customers? What trends are driving demands for your products/services?
The segments that were prominent during last year were immune health, cognitive health, and stress. We were able to support our customers with clinically tested ingredients for each of these segments. We published two new clinical studies on AP-Bio®/KalmCold®, substantiating its healthy inflammatory response and immunomodulatory properties.
We found a lot of interest in BacoMind® for attention, focus, and cognitive wellness, which also received Health Canada Health Claims, thereby validating the science on this ingredient. OciBest® was another product that received a good response from customers owing to its effects on managing the symptoms of stress and helping in sleep.
Q2. What is your company’s point of differentiation in the market?
At Natural Remedies, we combine our expertise in biology and chemistry to decipher the ‘bioactive compounds’ of medicinal plants to guarantee practical, consistent, safe, and differentiated natural ingredients.
It is this research approach that led to the development of patented extracts such as Turmacin® (Joint Health), GutGard® (Digestive Health), BacoMind® (Cognitive Wellness), AP-Bio® / KalmCold® (Immune Health), and Ocibest® (Stress Management).
